Buy a Laptop or PC Now, or Wait? The India 2026 Market Guide

The short answer: if you need a laptop, SSD or RAM in India right now, buy it — do not wait. Prices across almost the entire PC market are climbing through 2026 because of a global, AI-driven shortage of memory and storage, and the usual reasons to hold off — "the next GPU is coming", "prices will drop after the sale" — mostly do not apply this year. The one exception is if you specifically want a product that has just launched. Here is what is actually happening across the market, and the buy-now-or-wait call for each category.

What's happening in the PC market right now

One story is driving nearly all of it: the world's memory makers — Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron — have shifted manufacturing toward the high-bandwidth memory that AI datacentres consume, because it is far more profitable. That has pulled supply away from the ordinary RAM and storage that goes into laptops and PCs, and prices have followed.

• RAM has roughly 2.5–3x'd, and reporting points to elevated prices well into 2027–2028. Standard DDR4 rose more than 50% in a single quarter (WCCFTech / TrendForce).
• SSDs and storage joined the party. Consumer 1TB SSDs roughly doubled (about $45 to $90), and a 2TB NVMe drive that was around $175 in late 2025 was near $379 by early 2026 — a NAND-flash shortage from the same AI capacity shift, described as structural through 2027 (industry reporting).
• In India specifically, laptop prices are forecast to rise up to 35% across 2026 — machines that cost about ₹50,000 in early 2025 are trending toward ₹65,000–70,000, and entry models are drifting from ₹30–35k toward ₹45k, with little relief expected before late 2027 (91mobiles).
• GPUs are caught in it too. AMD has been raising Radeon RX 9000 prices (memory costs again), and Nvidia's much-anticipated RTX 50 "Super" refresh has slipped — reports through 2026 have pushed it from early-2026 to Q3 2026 and, in some accounts, all the way to CES 2027 (Tom's Hardware). Waiting for it is a bet with no firm date.
• Apple has already moved. The M5 MacBook Air launched in March 2026 (from about $1,099, now 512GB storage and 16GB memory as standard), so if you are set on a Mac, the current-generation machine is already here rather than something to wait for (Apple).

Buy now or wait — category by category

Laptops: buy now

This is the clearest call. Indian laptop prices are rising, not falling, and are not expected to ease until late 2027. Waiting almost certainly means paying more for the same machine. RAM: buy only what you need, now

RAM will very likely not be cheaper soon. If you have a genuine upgrade to make, do it now rather than waiting — a DDR4 module like the Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (₹11,149) is an example. But do not stockpile or overbuy capacity you will not use; buy the specific upgrade you need and stop there.

Storage / SSD: buy now if you need it

NAND prices are elevated and forecast to stay that way, so a needed drive is worth buying now rather than gambling on a drop. A dependable internal NVMe like the Crucial P3 Plus 2TB (₹32,499), or a large external such as the Seagate Expansion 1TB (₹9,899), is a sensible buy-now. As always, buy the capacity you actually need.

Graphics cards: buy if you need one — do not wait for the "Super"

If you need a GPU now, the delayed and undated RTX 50 Super is not a good reason to wait, and AMD's cards are trending up in price rather than down. The exception is the genuine enthusiast who can hold out and specifically wants next-gen — for everyone with a real need today, buying the right current card is the sound move.

Apple / Mac: the M5 is already here

If you want a MacBook, the M5 MacBook Air arrived in March 2026 and is the current machine — there is nothing imminent worth waiting for, though it remains a premium buy. The one real case for waiting

Hold off only if you have a specific, dated product you want that is genuinely about to launch — and even then, check the date at the source, because 2026 has been a year of slipping GPU and CPU timelines. "Prices will surely drop" is not, in this market, a reason to wait: the evidence points the other way.

Will laptop prices in India drop later in 2026?

It is unlikely. Forecasts point to prices rising through 2026 and staying elevated into late 2027, because the underlying memory and NAND shortage is structural, not a short blip.

Should I wait for the RTX 50 Super or next-gen GPUs?

Only if you are an enthusiast with no urgent need. The Super refresh has repeatedly slipped and has no firm launch date, and prices on current cards are not falling. If you need a GPU now, buy now.

Is now a bad time to buy a PC in general?

It is not a cheap time, but "wait for a better time" is the wrong instinct in 2026 — a better time is not clearly coming soon. Buy what you genuinely need now, and skip what you do not.
